Your Windshield
The design of today's cars and trucks make their windshields and backlites integral parts of the vehicle's overall structural strengths. The safety of the occupants partially depend on these components. The replacement of urethane-set auto glass requires these parts be installed with proper materials to maintain the *oem design criteria for strength and rigidity.
Curing notes: Humidity and heat are needed for all in one-part urethane sealants to cure. Humidity is the most important factor as the humidity and the greater the heat, the faster the urethane will cure. The lower the humidity and the colder the temperature, the slower the urethane will cure.
*oem specifications call for certain late model vehicles to have windhshields and model vehicles to have windshields and backlites mounted with butyl. We advise uterthane to used in addition as up to 18% of the structural integrity relies on the windshield.
1.First remove the surrounding molding. Cut out windshield with cold or power knife, or wire.
2. Remove all of old urethane down to the pinchweld. Clean pinchweld with G.P. solvent. Remove debris from bare or rust spots and prime them with Urethane Pinchweld Primer.
3. Place replacements glass into opening. Align for fit and reposition setting blocks ( if necessary). Mark position by appyling a few short strips of auto body masking tape across gap between glass edge and body. Silt tape at glass edge and remove glass.
4. Clean inside glass surface with alcohol free glass cleaner, then apply a coat of cleaner/conditioner to the windshield bond area to promote maximum adhesion. Allow to dry drive minutes before installation.
5. Apply dam tape to the inside of the pinchweld allowing a minimum 1/4" bit for the urethane on the pinchweld. Never apply dam tape to the windshield.
6 Cut nozzle to desired bead size; puncture inner sealant base of nozzle; insert in standard cartridge caulking gun.
7 Apply a bead of urethane behind the dam tape around the entire perimeter, optimum application temperature range should be observed per sealant specifications. Make sure application surface is frost-free.
8. Firmly place glass on lower settling blocks and align tape ends of glass and body. Be sure complete contact is madewith dam tape and the urethane.
9. Tool urethane around edge of glass . Backfill with urethane if neccesary.
10. Replace windshield molding and remaining parts. Clean excess urethane with G.P solvent. Clean glass with Alcohol free glass cleaner.
11. all urethen adequate time to cure sufficiently to hold winshield before driving vehicle. Do not slam doors with windows shut.
12. Vinyl tape (if needed ) must be used on mouldings as masking/crepe tapes leave residue.
